Ethylene oxide residues still found in sesame seeds

Sesame seeds and sesame products have been recalled from the market many times in the recent past due to ethylene oxide residues. In a recent test, sesame seeds and foods containing sesame were tested and elevated levels of ethylene oxide were still detected in four of 44 products.

Ethylene oxide is a pesticide used to gas sesame seeds to eliminate bacteria and fungi. Within the EU, the use of ethylene oxide in plant protection products is forbidden, but in India, for example, the active ingredient is widely used. According to a health assessment from the BfR, ethylene oxide is considered “mutagenic and carcinogenic.”

Within the EU, a legally permitted maximum residue level for ethylene oxide of 0.05 mg/kg in sesame is valid according to Regulation (EC) No. 396/2005.
